What Ignition Repair & Replacement Actually Involves
The ignition cylinder is the mechanical barrel your key slides into to start the vehicle. Over time, the internal wafers or pins that read the key's cuts wear down, causing the key to feel loose, get stuck, or fail to rotate. In other cases, a broken key fragment lodges inside the cylinder, making the whole assembly inoperable. Our technicians carry the diagnostic equipment and replacement components needed to handle all of these scenarios — extracting broken key pieces without destroying the cylinder when that is still viable, re-keying the cylinder to match your existing key when the internals are simply worn, or swapping in a new cylinder when the housing itself is cracked or seized beyond repair.
Ignition repair is more involved than a standard door lock service because the cylinder is embedded in the steering column and often tied to anti-theft electronics. Our team stays current on the differences between transponder-equipped ignitions on modern vehicles and the simpler mechanical systems found on older models. We handle the full scope: wafer replacement, cylinder re-keying, full cylinder extraction and installation, and transponder key programming where the vehicle requires it. Every step is carried out with the goal of preserving your original wiring and column trim — damage-free service wherever technically possible.
